Winter at
Fort Larned, Kansas
by Don Shorock

Winter at Fort Larned
Even if you do come to central Kansas on your vacation, you still probably won't see this. Summer is the big visitor season along the Santa Fé Trail, and few but the staff get to see the place in the beauty of the winter. Several years ago, he was fortunate enough to have business reasons to go to the Fort in winter, so he took his camera and snapped this picture. A few years later, the NPS had a photo contest and this one got him a ribbon (although he's cropped it some for bandwidth conservation here).

If you do come to Kansas in the winter, you'll usually find surprisingly nice winter weather punctuated by some really wild winter storms. Do what the locals do: as little as possible. If you're in a safe place, stay there and wait it out. Most bad weather out here doesn't last that long and conditions can be unforgiving of those who are in a just can't wait hurry.
