American Legion Baseball Kansas State Tournament 2001 Larned, Kansas
Moffet Stadium
Moffet Stadium was named for Alvus Moffet, founder of the First National Bank & Trust. He and his wife Edwina presented the land to the city in the days before the High School had a stadium of its own.
The field and concrete stadium were completed in the spring of 1937, as a WPA project. The area was cleared for a playing field and 1000 seat cement stadium. There were dressing rooms and bathroom facilities included in the plan.
The athletic field was to provide a football and baseball field in addition to a running track. During the construction the North end was flooded to provide a skating area that winter. The field was used by the school and recreation teams as well as American Legion & Ban Johnson teams. It also provide an arena for Horse shows, 4-H reviews, pageants and other events over the years. The first ball game was played on the field with the Ban Johnson team against Dodge City on May 1, 1937.
Over the past 64 years a number of changes have occurred for the athletic field. It is no longer for used football, but shares the baseball diamond with tennis courts. The baseball field had a new grass infield added two years ago. A concession stand and new restroom facilities have been added to the hilltop. The stadium itself is still very much as it was when it was completed in 1937.
